Cross and Torches Overlooking Track and Field

Many people who call to mind the “old” La Salle College building tend to think of the majestic dome, and naturally so.

However, right on the top of the dome was a cross, the one now overlooking the track and field at the eastern end.

The cross is flanked by two small torches. These were taken from atop the two decorative turrets.
Originally there was a red light beside the cross to help pilots steer their aeroplanes safely to land at Kai Tak airport.

Plaque to mark Opening of newly resurfaced Track and Field

After about 16 years of wear and tear, the track and field were showing signs of age. The school authorities, with the help of Old Boys, began to take steps to remedy the situation and a plan was devised to resurface the lot.

The Jockey Club agreed to match dollar for dollar for the $10 million project and this plaque commemorates their involvement.

17th Kowloon Scout Troop - Commemorative Plaques

The 17th Kowloon Scout Troop of La Salle College was established in 1937. Because of World War II and its aftermath, the Troop had a hard time of it until 1955. That year a Committee was formed, with the support of the Brother’s Sponsoring Authority, to help build up and strengthen the Troop. The Committee was chaired by Mr. T.K. Chen.

On the 6th April 1963, a plaque was unveiled in the old scout den commemorating the establishment of the Troop founded by Mr. Ma Kwan Kit and detailing some of its development highlights.

The year 1979 heralded the move to the new school building. In April that year, it was decided to commission another plaque, this time to commemorate the removal to the new school building.

It was also decided to acknowledge all the Chairmen and Committee members and Sponsoring Authority by a photographic collage.

The plaques and photographic collage were then installed in the existing Scout Room.

The plaque on the left was composed by Mr. Yip Wing Lam and handwritten by Mr. Ho Ching Hin while the plaque on the right was both composed and handwritten by Mr. Ho.

Both of these gentlemen were former teachers of Chinese in La Salle College and experts in their field.

Blown-up Picture of Old School

This huge picture of the facade of the old College was put up for auction at an Old Boys Dinner.

The highest bidder was Dr. Peter H.Y. Tang, an LSCOBA Past President, who immediately donated it back to the College. His generous gesture is appreciated.

Besides the appearance of the building itself, this picture will tell you something about student’s appearance as well as motor cars of the time.
